On The American Folk and Blues Festival Live ‘82 album, Blues - Various Artists have renewed their membership in the ‘if it ain’t broke…’ school of songwriting. After seeing Beefsteak Blues (James “Son” Thomas), I had to have a good Blues - Various Artists cd. Blues - Various Artists’s debut, ‘The American Folk and Blues Festival Live ‘82′, does not fit easily into one genre. Oh yes, this album gets Array out of Array
This is one of those tracks that should not be judged after the first hearing. Announcement By John Cephas stands out to me for its audacious melody and sheer beauty. In That Won’t Do (Archie Edwards) you won’t find any flashy solos. Take Me Back Baby (Archie Edwards) is the album’s biggest hit, I think. Big Boss Man (John Cephas and Phill Wiggins) is a song to savor, to listen to from every angle. Burn Your Bridges (John Cephas and Phill Wiggins) - Blues - Various Artists first major hit. Detroit Michigan (Lurrie Bell and Billy Brunch) to me is the best you can get from Blues - Various Artists. Tribute To Big Walter (Billy Branch, Phil Wiggins and Carey Bell) is possibly the most mysterious and inexplicable track Blues - Various Artists ever produced. I now have Running and Hiding (John Cephas and Phill Wiggins) as one of my personal favorites. The song Good Morning Little School Girl (John Cephas and Phill Wiggins) ending is my favorite… so catchy! Once you hear Stormy Monday Blues (James ’son’ Thomas), you will listen to it over and over. Goin’ On Main Street (Carey Bell) - This one makes me want to not only sing along. Some call Blues Harp Blues By Three (Carey Bell, Billy Branch, Phil Wiggins) from The American Folk and Blues Festival Live ‘82 as a quiet invitation of an artist to sit and listen. This track is nearly perfect if not perfect.
