Donovan was a flawless and timeless record. Not surprising from Donovan and Open Road together. Open Road is an amazing album, racked with beauty.Since completing 1970’s ‘Changes’, Donovan fulfilled their contract with Sparrow Records and where under no obligation to release another album. Cool, but I like their other actual stuff better like Open Road.
Song For John is one of my favorite songs by Donovan. The song feels complete. Joe Bean’s Theme - This one makes me want to not only sing along. It’s also one of those rare songs that touchingly comfort the listener. Celtic Rock is a amazing song and it grows on you. Riki Tiki Tavi - This is a very lively song. Clara Clairvoyant is a very catchy tune. Roots of Oak has a gorgeous instrumental sound, which lets Donovan’s strong vocals come to the fore. Although Season of Farewell is very melodic it is far from sad. Poke at the Pope is probably the most interesting track on Open Road. New Year’s Resolution is a striking and quite long song.
