This eleven-song debut EP shows the promise that Ella Fitzgerald has. This is one of the best Cd’s Ella Fitzgerald has dropped to date. ‘Ella at Duke’s Place’ kicks the album off with a blast of pure pop energy. Exciting stuff.
A Flower Is A Lovesome Thing is one of my favorite songs by Ella Fitzgerald. This track is a fabulous selection of easy listening, suitable for any age, taste or occasion. I Like the Sunrise defines beauty, yet is as unforgiving as an astringent stone. Azure is gorgeous song though, very addictive. Imagine My Frustration is a romantic if not formulaic ditty. Ella Fitzgerald must have run out of lyrics on the next track Duke’s Place [Aka C-Jam Blues]. Brown-skin Gal - For me, this is the best of the album. In What Am I Here For? you won’t find any flashy solos. Cotton Tail is the funkiest number on the album.
