This fourteen-song debut EP shows the promise that Ella Fitzgerald has. ‘The Harold Arlen Songbook (Volume One)’ kicks the album off with a blast of pure pop energy. While no new Ella Fitzgerald album is in sight, the artist has been road testing new songs during 1961 tour in Europe. Overall, I would highly recommend The Harold Arlen Songbook (Volume One) CD.
Vocals of Ella Fitzgerald in Let’s Fall In Love really capture me and are set perfectly to the rhythm. Strong, powerful vocals of Ella Fitzgerald in Stormy Weather are very impressive. Sing My Heart actually sounds so joyous, that you can practically see a smile on Ella Fitzgerald’s face. Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea is probably the highlight of the album. My Shining Hour is an incredible song that has everything it needs to be another favorite track. Hooray for Love is a song you cannot help but think about at odd moments in your day. This Time the Dream’s On Me is maybe the best thing the group’s ever done. That Old Black Magic has a beautifully haunting disco flavor. I’ve Got the World on a String - For me, this is the best of the album. Listening to Let’s Take a Walk Around the Block you can hear that Ella Fitzgerald has still amazing chemistry with band members. This song may be the most meaningful. Blew our minds when we first heard Ac-cent-tchu-ate the Positive.
