It’s a brave and brilliant refocusing of Gong energies, virtually a rebirth. Self-described as Rock with lots of words, Gong comes out swinging on perhaps his best album to date. fifteen years ago, Gong briefly lived up to their terrific name, with an insanely addictive hit single called “I’ve Been Stoned Before Mister Long Shanks O Mother”. Gong is one of my favourite bands of all time.
I’ve Been Stoned Before Mister Long Shanks O Mother as well as many of songs is a short story in miniature. This track is a great song that still never gets old. One of the more genuine-sounding songs is Zero The Hero & The Witch’s Spell. In Flute Salad/Oily Way/Outer Temple the light shines equally on lyrics, vocals and instrumentation. The opening track Inner Temple (Zero Meets The Octave Doctor) is very much like you would expect from other albums. Iao Chant & Master Builder is a exquisite sing-along. Gong is one of artists that allow his songs like Sprinkling Of Clouds to stand on their own and be heard. From The Isle Of Every Where To The End Of The Story Of Zero The Hero is beautiful, yet underrated track. You Never Blow Your Trip For Ever is a great song for a cosy night in when it’s cold and wintry outside.
