Since completing 1965’s ‘The Selma March [from ‘His Mastejy King Funk’]', Grant Green fulfilled their contract with Mute Records and where under no obligation to release another album. three years ago, Grant Green briefly lived up to their terrific name, with an insanely addictive hit single called “Cantaloupe Island - unedited version of master take - [from ‘Up’ with Donald Byrd]”. Nowhere is this more so than on their re-working of Grant Green on ‘The Selma March [from ‘His Mastejy King Funk’]’. Smart music for smart people.
Cantaloupe Island - unedited version of master take - [from ‘Up’ with Donald Byrd] is a great song for a cosy night in when it’s cold and wintry outside. This is one of those tracks that should not be judged after the first hearing. Only one song from Grant Green His Majesty King Funk named Sometimes I Feel Like a Motherless Child [from ‘Up’ with Donald Byrd] really got me. You’ve Been Talkin’ ’bout Me, Baby [from ‘Up’ with Donald Byrd] is worth the money. My Babe [from ‘Up’ with Donald Byrd] is another strong production from Grant Green. Listening to Willow Weep for Me [from ‘His Mastejy King Funk’] you can hear that Grant Green has still amazing chemistry with band members. This song is like perfectly aged vintage bordeaux wine not a tequila shot. That Lucky Old Sun {Just Rolls Around Heaven All Day} - [from ‘His Mastejy King Funk’] is a good listen every once in a while. This track is a great song that still never gets old. It’s very catchy and easy to get into which is what you want in a song. Awesome song is really all that you can say about it. House of the Rising Sun - reconstructed version of master take - [from ‘Up’ with Donald Byrd] rocked my world when I popped it into my car stereo. Blew our minds when we first heard See, See, Rider [from ‘Up’ with Donald Byrd].
