Quark, Strangeness And Charm isn’t so much a record, as a great effort at dragging you into another world. Since Hawkwind last CD (Quark, Strangeness And Charm) on Savoy Records back in 1977, I have felt a massive void in my life. Lead single “Spirit Of The Age” and “Damnation Alley” start with near-whispers before kicking into giddily catchy, fuzz box-driven hollered hooks. Hawkwind is one of my favourite bands of all time.
Damnation Alley has a gorgeous instrumental sound, which lets Hawkwind’s strong vocals come to the fore. Don’t judge Fable Of A Failed Race on the first listening. Quark, Strangeness And Charm is a very catchy tune. Hawkwind sings Hassan I Sahba in such a comforting, confident voice that you can’t help but be moved. Musically The Forge Of Vulcan is superior to other tracks in Quark, Strangeness And Charm. Days Of The Underground - another great track from the Quark, Strangeness And Charm album. Best song on the album, love it.
