Lightnin’ is an amazing album, racked with beauty.Self-described as Blues with lots of words, Lightnin’ Hopkins comes out swinging on perhaps his best album to date. It’s natural for Lightnin’ Hopkins to take a stab at ‘Automobile Blues’ considering her long-professed love for U2. Exciting stuff.
This song may be the most meaningful. Voice and instruments in Come Back Baby complement each other. This track is possibly the biggest guilty pleasure on Lightnin’. In Katie Mae the music gets its power. Outside of the singles, my favorite song on Lightnin’ is Mean Old Frisco. In Shining Moon the light shines equally on lyrics, vocals and instrumentation. Strong, powerful vocals of Lightnin’ Hopkins in The Walkin’ Blues are very impressive. This track is clearly meant to showcase Lightnin’ Hopkins’s vocal abilities. I’ve found myself listening to You Better Watch Yourself back to back and back many times.
