Lead single “We Belong Together” and “Living It Up” start with near-whispers before kicking into giddily catchy, fuzz box-driven hollered hooks. Pirates isn’t so much a record, as a great effort at dragging you into another world. It’s natural for Rickie Lee Jones to take a stab at ‘We Belong Together’ considering her long-professed love for KLF. Pirates touched my soul like nothing else.
Living It Up is the album’s biggest hit, I think. Skeletons is a good listen every once in a while. Woody and Dutch On The Slow Train To Peking is probably the most interesting track on Pirates. Pirates (So Long Lonely Avenue) is a striking and quite long song. I hope to keep hearing Rickie Lee Jones works for a long time to come. Traces Of The Western Slopes is a pleasing, and full of overall coherence that goes beyond other creations. This track is almost perfect, instrumentals and vocals combine awesomely.
