After seeing Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence, I had to have a good Ryuichi Sakamoto cd. It’s a brave and brilliant refocusing of Ryuichi Sakamoto energies, virtually a rebirth. I Love Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence from start to finish!
Simply the finest work ever from this multi-talented singer. Germination is the first taste of the new album. A hearty breakfast is one of those songs that will put you in a good mood. Before the war is possibly the most mysterious and inexplicable track Ryuichi Sakamoto ever produced. In The seed and the sower full palet of sound is used by Ryuichi Sakamoto to accentuate the presentation. After you’ve listened to A breef encounter, most everything else can’t hold up and is second rate. Ride, ride, ride - Okay, I just talked about depth. The fight - Well, here we get a bit more meaning. Some of the arrangements found on Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence are surprisingly edgy. Voice and instruments in Dismissed complement each other. Assembly is so unique, as each one of the songs is. It’s also one of those rare songs that touchingly comfort the listener. Sowing the seed is the song that really did it for me. 23 Rd psalm is a bit different from Ryuichi Sakamoto stereotypical stuff. Last regrets has a beautifully haunting disco flavor. Ride, ride, ride (Reprise) is a great song for a cosy night in when it’s cold and wintry outside. The seed to me is the best you can get from Ryuichi Sakamoto. Ryuichi Sakamoto emotions are reflected through Forbidden colours.
