There is so much to love about The Birthday Party, starting with incredible harmonies, songwriting chops and stellar stage presence. After seeing Mr. Clarinet, I had to have a good The Birthday Party cd. four years ago, The Birthday Party briefly lived up to their terrific name, with an insanely addictive hit single called “Happy Birthday”. Happy Birthday is a romantic if not formulaic ditty. Hats on Wrong - A strong beat. Song Guilt Parade is actually a funny song. In The Friend Catcher The Birthday Party spins a tale you want to hear to the end. Waving My Arms is a bit different from The Birthday Party stereotypical stuff. Catman has a gorgeous instrumental sound, which lets The Birthday Party’s strong vocals come to the fore. This song is dynamic and dramatic. Once A Catholic Skin gets in your head, it will NEVER leave. The Red Clock is a song that takes you on the journey before it reaches the conclusion. Faint Heart - This happy song is an ode to optimism and an anthem. Other tracks are good but your best bet is to stick with Death by Drowning. I now have The Hair Shirts as one of my personal favorites.
