On Jazz Masters 54 album, Woody Herman have renewed their membership in the ‘if it ain’t broke…’ school of songwriting. Nowhere is this more so than on their re-working of Woody Herman on ‘Don’t Get Around Much Anymore’. Woody Herman’s debut, ‘Jazz Masters 54′, does not fit easily into one genre. This is one of the best cd’s i have heard through the whole thing.
Sister Sadie is the album’s biggest hit, I think. Camel Walk makes a person feel excellent. Body and Soul is flawed, nonetheless pretty good song. Better Get Hit in Yo’ Soul is a bit different from Woody Herman stereotypical stuff. Jazz Me Blues is an incredible song that has everything it needs to be another favorite track. Voice and instruments in Caldonia complement each other. The Good Earth is a good listen every once in a while. Deep Purple has a gorgeous instrumental sound, which lets Woody Herman’s strong vocals come to the fore. Cousins good vocals. Just Squeeze Me (But Don’t Tease Me) is absolutely incredible. |titile| is quite refreshing and sets the tone for what is going on in Jazz Masters 54. Dear John C. - This happy song is an ode to optimism and an anthem.
